Additional units will create graduation problems at the upper division. Many programs require 80 units outside of journalism for the degree and each CSU may require up to 28 upper division units in the major. Sample Course Descriptions: Design for Desktop Publishing This course covers page design and layout systems for desktop publishing. The principles and terminology of typography are stressed. The scanning of graphic material such as illustrations and photographs will be covered with regard to the requirements of the publishing industry. Hands-on experience is emphasized. (Cerritos College, ART 188) Introduction to Critical Thinking This course introduces the techniques and skills of critical thinking. It provides practice in using language clearly; identifying, analyzing, constructing and evaluating deductive and inductive arguments; and exposing common fallacies in everyday reasoning. (Monterey Peninsula College, PHIL 10) Summary of Feedback Including Issues and Concerns: Mostly there were only minor concerns to the TMC. Comments indicating that this university or that university would have a problem with some of the courses in List A because those courses are upper division at their institutions are countered by the argument that the courses are considered lower division at other universities in the system. Indeed, this was a factor in determining to specify them in List A. It may be that some universities simply will not participate. Still others, including those represented on the FDRG with accredited programs felt that there was room with which to work. The main sticking point from the beginning was the inclusion of the student media course in the degree. To the community colleges this was essential, indeed it is the only way many community colleges could participate. This has been a long-standing point of contention between the community colleges and the universities. The universities readily acknowledge the value of the course from most community colleges students often transfer in with valuable student media experience that serves them well in the upper division, giving them an edge on native students but none offers lower division student media courses. Inclusion of the courses in the associate degree not only means students will transfer in with more than the typical 6 to 9 lower division major units, but some universities fear they will be expected to waive their upper division equivalents. We struck an important compromise by describing the student media courses as lower division student media practicums and beefed up the C-ID course descriptor to include points important to the universities. We also acknowledged that for some community colleges to participate not only must the student media course be included, a repeat experience is not only possible, but possibly even desired. University representatives on the FDRG concurred whole-heartedly. Additionally, we included a warning at the bottom of the TMC that students should avoid overloading on lower division journalism units and why.
