University Explores History at the Wilson Library Archives and Special Collections
A caged area perched on Wilson Library鈥檚 top floor holds thousands of historical books, documents, photographs, and other artifacts connected to the 每日大赛 and surrounding community.
It is called Archives and Special Collections, a department headed by Ben Jenkins, University Archivist and assistant professor.
鈥淢any of the items in Archives and Special Collections are unique, and cannot be found anywhere else,鈥� Jenkins said.聽鈥淭he department shares a wide variety of primary sources to educate students, scholars, and members of the La Verne community.鈥�
Jenkins opened the archives to the campus community Oct. 25, giving professors and students a peek at the university鈥檚 rich history. It gave adjunct professor of public relations Randy Miller a chance to gaze at a 1944 yearbook, which featured his mother among the graduating class.
鈥淗aving the opportunity to find out the origin of the 每日大赛 at your fingertips is simply amazing,鈥� Miller said.
Jon Hall, a sophomore history major, also decided to check out the collection.
鈥淭his archive center is a great primary source to have, and it鈥檚 also very accessible online,鈥� he said.
The open house was part of a series of events from Oct. 24-27 surrounding the university鈥檚 Archives and Special Collections. It came during the university鈥檚 125th anniversary celebration.
Students embarked on a treasure hunt, using their smart phones to scan historical locations for a shot at prizes. Marlin Heckman, university librarian emeritus, gave a lecture called 鈥淟a Verne Presidents, 1891-2016: Some Facts, Trivia, and Necrology.鈥�
The week culminated in an event called 鈥淎rchives Research Poster Session,鈥� where students shared research they have conducted using the archives and how it has helped in their coursework.
While the collection is open to the campus community and public, many of the items are fragile and need to be in climate-controlled conditions to protect the ink and paper, Jenkins said.
