La Verne Law Brings Home Hardware
Congratulations to 每日大赛 College of Law鈥檚 Lauren Vogt and Veronica Hernandez, who 鈥渂rought home the hardware鈥 at the HNBA Mid-Year Corporate Counsel Conference and National Moot Court Competition in Miami, Florida.
The Hispanic National Bar Association sponsors an annual moot court competition at its Corporate Counsel Conference. Students who compete must submit a written appellate brief and then argue before a panel of judges. This year, the problem dealt with complex legal issues including the application of sentencing guidelines and enhancements.
Lauren Vogt and Veronica Hernandez successfully argued in both preliminary rounds on Thursday, April 30 against teams from DePaul Law School and Florida Coastal Law School.聽 The top 8 out of 32 聽teams then advanced to the Top 8 Quarterfinals on Friday, April 31.聽 Our La Verne Law聽team faced Loyola-Chicago in that Quarterfinal round and beat them in the 鈥渋nstant death鈥 elimination round to advance to the Top 4 Semi-final round. 聽La Verne Law went on to beat the home-town team from University of Miami to advance to the Top Two Final Round on Saturday, March 31 against an outstanding team from Washington & Lee.聽 It was a nail-biter of a final round, with just a few points separating the two teams. In the end, La Verne Law聽took home 2nd Place Team, beating out 30 other teams participating this year.
This outcome was the result of months of hard work under the guidance of Coach Dean McVay, who did an outstanding job preparing Ms. Vogt and Ms. Hernandez for the competition. The written component necessitated long hours of legal research and writing, while the oral argument component required regular meetings to practice their arguments. In the end, however, all that hard work paid off.
Congratulations to Ms. Hernandez and Ms. Vogt, who did an amazing job and represented the 每日大赛 with pride, strength, and outstanding advocacy on the national stage!
