Adjunct Professor Scott Essman learned something surprising about his students the first day of his new film class in January.<\/p>\n

Hardly any of them had seen the classic 1979 Ridley Scott horror movie \u201cAlien.\u201d<\/p>\n

The horror aficionado and longtime cinema journalist knew he had to fix that, especially since his course focused on that very genre: Horror films.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re treating it like a film appreciation class, just within this particular genre,\u201d Essman said.<\/p>\n

The idea stemmed from another class Essman taught last January called \u201cHollywood in La Verne,\u201d which approached cinema from a broader perspective. Essman\u2019s love for horror movies, and his connections with icons of the genre, led to Communications Department Chair Dr. George Keeler suggesting the new class to Essman.<\/p>\n

\u201cScott jumped at that and loved the idea,\u201d said Don Pollock, Communications Professor.<\/p>\n

The class \u201cMonsters, Magic, and the Macabre \u2013 A Century of Horror Cinema\u201d runs the gamut of silent films to modern movies. Students examine films in terms of cinematography, lighting and other elements. They\u2019ve viewed movies such as the original \u201cPhantom of the Opera\u201d and \u201cDr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re actually going in depth on what makes a film excellent, regardless of what genre it may be in,\u201d Essman said.<\/p>\n

Like his Hollywood in La Verne class, the horror cinema course includes a number of film industry guest speakers \u2013 some tied to Hollywood legends. They include Bela Lugosi Jr., son of the actor who played Dracula in the 1931 film of the same name. Sara Karloff, daughter of \u201cFrankenstein\u201d actor Boris Karloff also attended. Dean Cundey, a longtime cinematographer, whose work includes 1978\u2019s \u201cHalloween\u201d and 1982\u2019s \u201cThe Thing,\u201d was another guest speaker. It was Cundey\u2019s second trip to La Verne. He came to the institution several years ago to supervise a student film.<\/p>\n

And Hollywood director Joe Dante, whose credits include 1981\u2019s \u201cThe Howling,\u201d as well as \u201cGremlins\u201d and \u201cInnerspace,\u201d stopped by Jan. 27 to share his perspectives on the genre.<\/p>\n

Karloff and Lugosi Jr. visited the class Jan. 23 to answer questions about their fathers and their acting careers. They also displayed some movie memorabilia for students. They liked the concept of having a college film appreciation class focused on horror.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled because it introduces new generations to the legacy our fathers left,\u201d said Karloff, a Rancho Mirage resident.<\/p>\n

Lugosi Jr., who lives in La Ca\u00f1ada Flintridge, described his father\u2019s rise to fame as \u201cboth a blessing and a curse\u201d because the classically-trained actor was immediately typecast following \u201cDracula.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter that, he was always cast as the head boogeyman,\u201d Lugosi Jr. said. \u201cThat was something he regretted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Melissa Enciso, a La Verne junior, was a horror fan prior to taking the class and a huge fan of \u201cFrankenstein,\u201d so Karloff\u2019s visit made the class even more exciting. But the class also appeals to her from a filmmaking perspective.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this class, we\u2019re able to dissect horror films for all their aspects \u2013 the cinematography, editing and directing as well,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Senior Serena Ghazzawi took the class because she had taken \u201cHollywood in La Verne\u201d and has an interest in filmmaking. She did not know much about the horror genre beforehand.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have more of an understanding and a passion for it now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Most students enrolled in the class are communications majors, but some are taking the course as an elective. They include students majoring in biology and kinesiology, among other disciplines.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s never been tried before, and so far it\u2019s been going well,\u201d Essman said.<\/p>\n
