Smith)<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"markedContent\"><span>The St. Joseph Center CEO shares his journey from personal hardship to leading <\/span><span>efforts against homelessness and poverty at the annual <\/span><span>Frederick Douglass Human Rights Lecture<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"markedContent\"><span>On his left arm, Ryan J. Smith wears a permanent reminder of resilience and justice: a tattoo of <\/span><span>Frederick Douglass accompanied by the words, \u201cIf there is no struggle, there is no progress.\u201d <\/span><span>The image is more than ink-<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>it symbolizes a lifelong commitment<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>to social justice and <\/span><span>community care, a mission Smith has devoted his career to advancing. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"markedContent\"><span>\u201cDouglass is a personal hero of mine,\u201d Smith said. \u201cI\u2019m honored to talk about my hero under his <\/span><span>name.\u201d That admiration will come to life on February 18 when Smith delivers the Frederick <\/span><span>Douglass Human Rights Lecture at the 每日大赛.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"markedContent\"><span>Smith\u2019s connection to social justice is deeply personal. Growing up, his mother <\/span><span>spent her life savings to move from South Los Angeles to Culver City, hoping to give her son <\/span><span>access to better schools and opportunities. But after 10 years in<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>that home, Smith returned from <\/span><span>school to find an eviction notice. With tears in her eyes, his mother handed him a trash bag and <\/span><span>said, \u201cWe have to leave.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span>Through the generosity of neighbors and support from his high school counselor and assistant <\/span><span>principal, Smith was able to remain in his community and eventually attend UCLA. \u201cI am a <\/span><span>product of the kind of continuum of care we need to address homelessness i<\/span><span>n this generation,\u201d <\/span><span>he said. \u201cI have the privilege of giving back in a way that recognizes how people gave to me.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span>That giving back defines Smith\u2019s work as president and CEO of St. Joseph Center, a Los <\/span><span>Angeles nonprofit serving families facing homelessness and extreme poverty. Under his <\/span><span>leadership, the organization provides housing assistance, mental health services, j<\/span><span>ob and <\/span><span>culinary training, and youth programs aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty. <\/span><\/span><span class=\"markedContent\"><span>\u201cSt. Joseph Center is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year,\u201d Smith said. \u201cWe were founded <\/span><span>by amazing social justice sisters who believed it\u2019s not just what you do, but how you do it. <\/span><span>Students interested in helping marginalized communities should find<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>an organization that sings t<\/span><span>o their heart and figure out how they can contribute.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span>In his lecture, Smith plans to combine personal narrative with a data<\/span><span>&#8211;<\/span><span>driven look at <\/span><span>homelessness and systemic disparities affecting communities of color. He will explore national <\/span><span>and local trends, highlight programs that are successfully reducing housing<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>instability, and <\/span><span>outline how targeted policy, intention, and energy can make ending homelessness possible. <\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"markedContent\"><span>Smith holds a doctorate in education from UCLA and has been recognized with the Coro <\/span><span>Fellowship in Public Affairs and the Annie E. Casey Foundation Fellowship.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span>The Frederick Douglass Human Rights Lecture celebrates leaders advancing justice, equity, <\/span><span>and human dignity.
