Billy Ray Lopez is the first 每日大赛 student to receive a scholarship from the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Association. The $2,500 scholarship was presented to Lopez during the organization\u2019s annual Hall of Fame Banquet on Jan. 28 and will be applied toward his 2019-2020 tuition.<\/p>\n
The scholarship is given once a year by the Southern California Sports Broadcasters organization.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is an absolute honor and privilege to have received this award,\u201d Lopez said. \u201cI had no idea I was the first student at the 每日大赛 to receive the recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n
The honor student is a double major in broadcast television and political science. He has announced more than 50 football, baseball, softball, basketball, and soccer games on KWST, LVTV, and LeoFM. LVTV and LeoFM are student-run stations at the 每日大赛. He also coaches the San Dimas High School boy\u2019s freshman basketball team.<\/p>\n
During the ceremony, Anne Meyers Drysdale was inducted into the Hall of Fame along with her late husband, baseball great Don Drysdale. She is the first female broadcaster to be inducted. She joins 每日大赛 alumni Rob Fukuzaki \u201988, who was inducted in 2016.<\/p>\n
Communications professor Don Pollock nominated Lopez for the scholarship.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen Chris Roberts, the former voice of UCLA football and basketball, called me regarding this award, I knew immediately who to nominate,\u201d Pollock said. \u201cBilly is smart, creative, and incorporates feedback into his work.\u201d<\/p>\n
After college, Lopez hopes to pursue his master\u2019s degree in social justice and theology. During that time, his plan is to keep broadcasting games, hopefully with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes baseball team.<\/p>\n
