{"id":8269,"date":"2019-03-11T15:15:04","date_gmt":"2019-03-11T22:15:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/?p=8269"},"modified":"2022-01-12T12:32:27","modified_gmt":"2022-01-12T20:32:27","slug":"time-honored-sage-ceremony-opens-global-sustainability-lecture-university-la-verne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/2019\/03\/11\/time-honored-sage-ceremony-opens-global-sustainability-lecture-university-la-verne\/","title":{"rendered":"Time-honored Sage Ceremony Opens Global Sustainability Lecture at 每日大赛"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">每日大赛<\/a> students, faculty, and community members participated in a sage ceremony before attending a lecture on Monday by indigenous environmental activist and hip hop artist, Xiuhtezcatl Martinez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Martinez spoke in the Sara and Michael Abraham Campus Center about his work in environmental justice as part of the Robert and Mary Neher Global Sustainability Lecture. The lecture, \u201cGalvanizing Youth to be Effective Leader,\u201d aimed to spark discussion and action on campus regarding environmental, economic, and social concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cMy talk today is a reflection on some of the life that I\u2019ve lived and how to change the conversation to engage our generation better,\u201d Martinez said. \u201c\u2026I do my best to inspire young voices and help them realize the power we have to make change.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Martinez, 18, the youth director of Earth Guardians, has addressed the United Nations and is currently a lead plaintiff in a lawsuit against the government for failing to protect the atmosphere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The event began with a sage ceremony held in front of <a href=\"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/housing\/residence-halls\/citrus-hall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Citrus Hall<\/a> performed by Trevor Thomson, a Karuk artist. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt was beautiful to open up with a ceremony. It\u2019s powerful,\u201d Martinez said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Thomson led the ceremony participants in a procession to the Campus Center where Martinez began his lecture followed by a signing of his book, \u201cWe Rise,\u201d and a meet-and-greet with student leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n\t<div class=\"wp-playlist
