{"id":8759,"date":"2019-05-28T08:47:24","date_gmt":"2019-05-28T15:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/?p=8759"},"modified":"2022-01-12T12:30:54","modified_gmt":"2022-01-12T20:30:54","slug":"anthropology-student-wins-national-scholarship-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/news\/2019\/05\/28\/anthropology-student-wins-national-scholarship-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Anthropology Student Wins National Scholarship Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Photo by Mike Fink<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Amanda \u201cBillie\u201d Guerrero, a senior Anthropology student, is the recipient of a $3,000 scholarship awarded by the Lambda Alpha National Anthropology Honor Society. Guerrero is the first recipient from the 每日大赛\u2019s College of Arts &amp; Sciences to apply and place second in the national competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughters jumped up and down when they learned I had won,\u201d Guerrero said. Guerrero is a single mother of two who transferred to the 每日大赛 from Chaffey College. She grew up in the foster care system, but strived to achieve more in her education with the help of scholarships and supportive faculty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would not be graduating without the support of Dr. Kanya Godde,\u201d Guerrero said. \u201cHer focus and attention to help me complete my courses meant everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Godde encouraged Guerrero to apply and submit her research for the competition. \u201cAt first, I had no intention of applying,\u201d Guerrero said. \u201cWhat were my chances of winning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, Guerrero\u2019s passion for anthropology and paleontology lead to victory. She was awarded the scholarship for her research on the skeletal differences in Neanderthals and how those differences relate and affect today\u2019s structure. Her senior thesis takes a closer look at the unique brain cases of dinosaurs and how that impacted their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Guerrero was the former president of the 每日大赛 Lambda Alpha chapter. She has worked in a human anthropology lab, at a local museum, and most currently as an analyst for the institutional board at the university.<\/p>\n<p>The soon-to-be graduate aspires to earn her Ph.D. and work at a community college one day. \u201cI\u2019d love to help others who share a similar background as mine and inspire them to go for their dreams,\u201d Guerrero said.
