Learn more about anger issues and fighting bystander intervention.<\/p>\n<h2>Scenario<\/h2>\n<p>You and a few teammates are at a party when someone begins insulting you (for being athletes, for a team\u2019s performance, etc.). Despite everyone\u2019s best effort to ignore these obnoxious comments, you can see one of your teammates is becoming more and more irritated. He has a history of losing his temper. What do you do?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Questions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Can anger be a good thing (functional anger)? If so, when?<\/li>\n<li>Have you been at a party where a fight broke out? What happened? What did you do? Were you a bystander or intervener \u2013 why? Would you do anything differently now?<\/li>\n<li>Do you think there are people who look for fights? Why?<\/li>\n<li>Do you think people sometimes target student-athletes? Why?<\/li>\n<li>Is anger an athletic community issue? How so?<\/li>\n<li>What are some possible triggers?<\/li>\n<li>Are there unwritten codes of conduct acceptable in certain subcultures that may not be permissible in the general population? Explain\/Describe.<\/li>\n<li>If you use anger to \u201cpump yourself up\u201d as a student-athlete, is it hard to turn it off when you are away from your sport? Why or why not?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Considerations<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the athletic world, it is sometimes more acceptable to express anger and not other emotions. Therefore, many people will act angry when they are really feeling something else that they are uncomfortable expressing, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stress<\/li>\n<li>Frustration<\/li>\n<li>Fear<\/li>\n<li>Annoyance<\/li>\n<li>Disappointment<\/li>\n<li>Resentment<\/li>\n<li>Shame<\/li>\n<li>Embarrassment<\/li>\n<li>Hurt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Anger is a normal emotion that becomes a problem when it:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Is too intense<\/li>\n<li>Lasts too long<\/li>\n<li>Occurs too frequently<\/li>\n<li>Escalates \u2013 Overreacting to a justified wrong or carries over on field\/off field<\/li>\n<li>Focuses and blames only \u201cothers\u201d \u2013 world, situation, anything except self<\/li>\n<li>Is harmful to self or others<\/li>\n<li>Leads to aggression or violence<\/li>\n<li>Destroys personal relationships<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Some common causes of anger are:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Being too ego-driven or invested \u2013 Taking it TOO personally<\/li>\n<li>Getting sucked in \u2013 No longer looking for ways out (exits) or solutions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>People who fight often:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Misinterpret the intent or motives of others<\/li>\n<li>Are unable to see alternative rationales<\/li>\n<li>Are openly and frequently defiant of requests<\/li>\n<li>Vocalize anger: furious temper, uncontrollable fits of rage<\/li>\n<li>Demean or swear directly to parent or others in authority positions<\/li>\n<li>Make threats; are aggressive<\/li>\n<li>Seem to have \u201cemotional diarrhea,\u201d and \u201clets it all out, all the time\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Have difficulty accepting \u201cNo\u201d for an answer<\/li>\n<li>Do not follow rules; often feels rules are \u201cstupid,\u201d or don\u2019t apply<\/li>\n<li>Destroy property<\/li>\n<li>Are physically cruel to animals<\/li>\n<li>Are physical cruel to people<\/li>\n<li>Initiate fights with others<\/li>\n<li>Seriously violate rules (at home, in school, or society in general)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Action Steps<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Create plans together to avoid high-risk situations and consequences<\/li>\n<li>Be aware of triggers<\/li>\n<li>Be aware of defined danger: mad dogging, dirty looks, individuals looking for a fight<\/li>\n<li>Do not try to detain angry individuals \u2013 even if they run away<\/li>\n<li>Interrupt the situation\/Distract the people involved<\/li>\n<li>Beware of increasing aggressive behavior and try to diffuse the situation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What bystanders should remind the individuals involved:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>STOP AND THINK \u2013 Is it worth it in the long run?<\/li>\n<li>REMOVE THE DRAMA<\/li>\n<li>REMOVE THE EGO<\/li>\n<li>Avoid Retaliation\/Escalation<\/li>\n<li>Agree with rationale but challenge the action<\/li>\n<li>Focus on solving the problem NOT winning the \u201cfight\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t get caught up in the moment and don\u2019t let others bring them down.
