{"id":11429,"date":"2022-05-17T10:54:36","date_gmt":"2022-05-17T17:54:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/?page_id=11429"},"modified":"2024-06-24T11:39:35","modified_gmt":"2024-06-24T18:39:35","slug":"free-broadband","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/laverne.edu\/technology\/technology-for-students\/free-broadband\/","title":{"rendered":"Free broadband in Southern California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The federal government launched the Affordable Connectivity Program at the end of 2021 to provide $30-per-month subsidies for households with incomes at twice the federal poverty level or lower.<\/p>\n<p>The White House revealed that 20 broadband providers across the country, including five of the largest cable TV and telephone companies, had agreed to provide \u201csufficiently high-speed\u201d connections at no more than $30 a month to qualifying homes.<\/p>\n<p>Eight of those 20 broadband providers serve communities in Southern California are AT&amp;T, Comcast, Cox, Frontier, Mediacom, Spectrum, Starry and Verizon.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the agreement, the White House said, Spectrum \u2014 which serves much of L.A. County doubled the bandwidth of its $30-per-month offering from 50 to 100 megabits per second for qualified households. And Verizon cut the price of its 200 Mbps wired offering from $40 to $30 per month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Am I Eligible for the program?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The income cutoff is 200% of the\u00a0federal poverty level, which is higher for larger households. For a single individual, the threshold is $27,180 per year. For a family of four, it\u2019s $55,500.<\/li>\n<li>To see whether you qualify or to submit an application, you can visit the White House\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/getinternet\/?utm_source=www.getinternet.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Get Internet<\/a>\u201d web page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How to apply<\/strong><br \/>\nDue to a lack of additional funding from Congress, the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) stopped accepting new applications as of February 7, 2024.
